OUR LOVES AND PRACTICES
What we care about most, and how that shapes the way we live.
As we grow in love for God and His ways, that love finds expression in how we live, worship, rest, and relate to others.
What we believe does not stay abstract; it takes shape in everyday life.
OUR LOVES
-
God is love, and we never want to lose sight of that.
He has shown the depth of that love through Jesus, by coming into our world, living as one of us, giving His life, rising again, and promising to return to make all things new.
This great story of what God has done for us in Jesus, often called the gospel (meaning “good news”), is the lens through which we see and understand ourselves, the world, and everything in it. It is the entry point into relationship with God, and our lives continue to be shaped and transformed by it.
All our hope is in Jesus. We believe we are deeply loved by God.
-
Because of God’s great love for us, we respond with love for Him.
Jesus taught that loving God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind is the most important thing in life. Everything else flows from this. Our worship, our choices, our priorities, and our relationships are all shaped by a growing love for God.
-
Jesus calls us to reflect His love in tangible, practical ways to the people around us.
The love of God compels us to care for the poor, the oppressed, the vulnerable, and the broken. Followers of Jesus are called to love not only those who love them back, but everyone, even their enemies, because that is how Jesus loved.e
-
Jesus commands His followers to love one another just as He has loved us. His desire is that this kind of love would be what identifies us to the world as His people.
This unusual, countercultural community of love, His church, can only be formed through His work in our lives. Its very existence points beyond itself, to Jesus, whom we believe is Lord.
We want to be known for this love. This is the church Jesus desires, and the church we long to be.
-
We believe God is still at work in the world, inviting ordinary people into His work of bringing renewal, hope, and restoration.
Jesus sent His followers to continue the mission He began, sharing the good news, helping others learn how to follow Him, and revealing what life looks like under God’s loving rule. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and given different gifts so that, together, they could reflect the fullness of who Jesus is to the world.
We believe every follower of Jesus is called and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live out their faith wherever they are, playing their unique, God-given role in God’s ongoing mission to bring all things together in Christ.
OUR practices
-
God has invited us into relationship with Himself through Jesus. We are known and loved by God, and He desires that we would know and love Him in return.
Pursuing this relationship is our greatest honour and shapes the rhythm of our lives. We prioritise prayer and worship as ways of centring our lives on God and responding to who He is.
We regularly gather with others to pray and worship, some daily, others weekly, but always with the same conviction: before we do anything, we look to God. Whether we are gathered for a Sunday service, a trustees’ meeting, or anything in between, we begin by seeking Him.
After all, this is His church, not ours.
-
We believe the Bible is more than just an ancient book; it is what we believe to be the living Word of God. Through it, God still speaks today, revealing His heart, His wisdom, and His ways.
As we read, we trust that the Holy Spirit helps us understand and apply what God is saying, shaping our lives from the inside out. To help us grow together, we follow a shared daily reading plan. Some of us read alone, others in small groups, but we journey through the same Scriptures so that God’s Word forms us both individually and as a community.
-
Jesus began the practice of breaking bread with His friends as a way to remember Him, His love, His sacrifice, and the new relationship He made possible between us and God, and with one another.
When we share in this together, we are reminded that it is Jesus who brings us close to God, changes us from the inside out, and unites us as family through His saving work. We continue this practice today as a way of re-centring our hearts on what Jesus has already done and what He continues to do in us.
-
Rest is one of the ways we worship God. From the beginning, when God finished creating the world and rested, He built rest into the rhythm of life. Later, He gave this pattern to His people as a gift, a regular time to stop, breathe, and remember who He is.
For us, Sabbath is more than recovery from busyness. It is about returning to the One who gives true rest. Jesus invites us to lay down our striving and our need to prove ourselves, and to trust that He is enough.
Each time we choose rest, we remind ourselves that the most meaningful life is not built on our own effort, but on the finished work of Jesus.
-
We are devoted to one another. The Bible uses the word koinonia to describe the close, shared life of the first followers of Jesus, a life marked by deep connection, mutual care, and shared purpose.
This kind of life together flows from Jesus’ prayer that His followers would be one, His command that we love one another, and His uniting of us through the Holy Spirit. To pursue this kind of community, we are committed to the following practices.
-
We seek to show genuine hospitality and generosity by opening our homes and sharing our lives and resources. The first followers of Jesus lived this way so fully that no one among them was in need.
We long to reflect that same spirit today, a community where people are welcomed, cared for, and provided for as an expression of God’s love.
-
Living closely with others can be messy. When we share our lives deeply, we will sometimes disappoint or hurt one another. True community does not avoid this reality but faces it with honesty and grace.
Forgiveness is not easy, and it takes practice. But we forgive because we have been forgiven. Knowing the grace God has shown us shapes the way we treat one another and gives us the strength to extend that same grace in return.
-
Jesus’ command to “make disciples,” to help others learn how to follow Him, is given to every one of His followers.
We want to see people who are far from God encounter the love of Jesus, and those who come to faith grow in their relationship with Him. This calling is not reserved for professionals or leaders, but belongs to all of us.
We believe every member of the church should be helping someone else grow in faith, while also being supported and encouraged by others. This is how we grow together.
-
The Bible describes the church as a body, made up of many different parts, each with an essential role to play.
Every follower of Jesus has a God-given place in the church and gifts given by the Holy Spirit for the good of others. When we gather, we come not as consumers, but as contributors, ready to build one another up and serve the life of the whole community.
-
In a church where everyone has a part to play, leaders serve as equippers rather than as the only ministers.
Their role is to help others grow, mature, and step into what God has called them to do. Rather than doing everything themselves, leaders support and release others into active participation in the life of the church and in God’s work in the world.
-
We believe the church exists for God’s mission, to reveal His love and bring restoration to the world.
God works through His church not only when we gather, but as we go, sent out into everyday life. As we depend on the Holy Spirit, we discover our purpose in the places we live, work, and serve.
It has often been said that the church does not have a mission; the mission has a church.
-
God is merciful and just, and we seek to reflect His heart. Jesus showed compassion to the sick, the poor, and the broken, even to those who did not follow Him.
Rooted in local communities, we are committed to meeting physical, emotional, and spiritual needs as an expression of the gospel. We do this through mercy and justice initiatives that bring practical help and real hope, and by choosing compassion in everyday life.
Our aim is not only to build programmes, but to form people who carry the hope of Jesus wherever they go.
-
We believe our work life and our faith are deeply connected. God is at work through our work, and one day He will fully restore the world through Jesus.
In the meantime, He places His people throughout society, in homes, workplaces, schools, and industries, to bring light, wisdom, and hope. Whatever we do, whether raising families, running businesses, creating art, or serving others, we seek to do it with integrity, purpose, and trust in God.
There is no divide between what is sacred and what is ordinary. God is at work in it all.
Why We Practice These Things
We practice these things because Jesus, in His grace and mercy, has won our hearts, transformed our lives, and invited us into His purposes for the world.
We practice them because the world is broken and in need of hope, and we believe Jesus brings healing and renewal. His coming into the world changes everything. Knowing this, it simply makes no sense to live any other way.
